Be Aware of the Bathroom Heater in Baby Bath

Many household bathrooms are equipped with a bathroom heater on the bathroom ceiling, the type of heater which combines several heater bulbs and a ventilating fan. This type of heater is very convenient to use in winter when the room temperature is cold.

For households that don’t have the typical heater installed, it’s an easy and economic solution, especially when there is a baby that needs to be bathed at home and the temperature is too low.

However, the heater bulbs have particularly high energy and intensity when turned on. Anyone, no matter adult or child, that looks directly into those lights would have potential damages to the mucula lutea (yellow spot) of the eyes even for a very short period of time.

Babies and children will not have their mucula lutea fully developed until they’re about 4 years old. There it is extremely important to protect them from the any acute or chronic ophthalmological caused by any intense light sources in life.

The blue light, especially, in the bathroom heater bulbs, is the one that majorly causes mucula diseases. Blue light is a high-energy light that has wavelength of 450-495nm. Blue light can go directly through the cornea and lens, causing burn damage to the mucula lutea, which leads to visual impairment or even blindness.

In fact, blue light comes from many accessible light sources in our daily life. LED screen, LED light, cellphone screen, tablet screen, flash light, we are exposed to these things every day, and we bring our babies and kids into the exposure as well.

So, if you are worried about your baby getting cold in the bath in winter and are thinking about turning the bathroom heater on, you could turn on the heater bulbs before the bath, wait till the room temperature gets warmer, and then turn off the bulbs when you are about to give the baby bath.
